The P.E.I. provincial government in Canada will now fund three procedures for gender reassignment surgery for P.E.I. residents. The surgeries—Top surgery, hysterectomy and orchiectomy—will be performed on P.E.I.
Health Minister Doug Currie said the change came after he had a meeting with Ash Arsenault and others from the transgender community last spring.
It is estimated there are 2 or 3 transgender patients per year looking for one or more of the surgeries, at a total cost of less than $5,000.
The government said it is willing to consider covering other GRS procedures in the future.
GRS coverage in Canada is available on a province-by-province basis, with some provinces covering all surgeries and others covering none.
