Turkey’s First Shelter For Transgender People Has Opened In Istanbul


ISTANBUL, TURKEY – JUNE 22, 2014: 5. Trans Pride March held in Istiklal Avenue, Istanbul. Thousands of people gathered to celebrate begining of LGBT Honor week.

The Radikal news website has reported that Turkey’s first shelter for transgender people has opened in Instanbul.

Miss Ay, a transgender woman, describes herself as a devout Muslim and said she wanted to set up the shelter to help and protect other transgender people. Funding for the shelter was gathered through donations and a trans fashion show, which raised 44,000 liras (about $18,000 USD). “That night I cried. Everything was great,” Miss Ay says, adding that she hopes to expand the shelter in future.
