Independent candidate Madhu Kinnar has beaten the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Mahaveer Guruji by 4357 votes on 4 January to become mayor of Raigarh, which lies west of the India-Bangladesh border. The win also makes Kinnar India’s first transgender mayor.
Kinnar, 35, funded her electoral campaign by working as a singer and dancer on Howrah-Mumbai trains in 2014.
“People have shown faith in me. I consider this win as love and blessings of people for me. I’ll put in my best efforts to accomplish their dreams,” Kinnar said in an interview.
