At a special General Membership Meeting of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3903, a motion was passed today to establish a Trans Caucus, setting a precedent in the North American labour movement.
The Trans Caucus is a project of some CUPE 3903 members within the Trans Fund Committee that aims to modernize the operation of the current Trans Fund Committee and expand its educational and advocacy role within the union.
CUPE 3903 has only one other Caucus formed around human rights issues: the Trans Feminist Action Caucus. Initially formed as the CUPE 3903 Women’s Caucus in 1986, the Women’s Caucus renamed itself in 2006 as a way of reflecting its identification with and support of trans members. The Trans Caucus initiative builds on this important heritage, and on the union’s important work promoting human rights and equity issues.
