Swedish Court Repeals Sterilization Requirement

The Administrative Court of Appeals in Stockholm, Sweden has announced that the requirement in the Swedish Law on Legal Gender Recognition that a person wishing to change gender marker must undergo sterilization violates the Swedish Constitution and the European Convention of Human Rights. Furthermore, the requirement must thus be removed, with revision of the law to be effective July 1st 2013.

Swedish sterilization requirements have been deemed among the harshest of their kind, with applicants forced to undergo surgical sterilization and as well as have any frozen sperm or eggs destroyed.
