The province of B.C.’s Medical Services Plan (MSP) has opted to begin covering phalloplasty and metoidioplasty surgeries for transgender men. MSP has been disseminating the news for more than a month, but the official announcement was made at the Canadian Professional Association for Transgender Health (CPATH) conference in Winnipeg last week.
The surgeries will be covered for five people a year, for five years, and the surgeries will be performed by Dr. Brassard in Montreal. MSP is currently working on the waiting list criteria.
“With British Columbia getting on board and valuing the medical necessity of phalloplasty, then that’s going to influence other provinces too,” said Jim Oulton, president of CPATH.
SRS has been covered for trans women in BC for many years, but genital surgeries for men were de-listed about a decade ago and labeled as “experimental.”
Editor’s Note: The source article doesn’t mention it but metoidioplasty will also be covered.
